64-bit Windows 7, Cisco VPN client and XP mode – Part 1
May 20th, 2009 | by Vladimir Stajic |I was a bit adventurous the other day. After a successful initial testing of the Windows 7 Release Candidate on a home PC, I decided that I would like to see how it would function in a business environment.
After getting a blessing from the IT department and backing up all my documents and important settings, I proceeded with reinstalling my laptop.
Since the laptop has 4 GB of RAM, I decided to try a 64-bit version of Windows 7. The 32-bit versions of Windows can only access 3–3.5 GB of RAM, as some memory addressing space is reserved by hardware devices in the computer. Because 64-bit versions don’t have such limitations, I could take full advantage of all the RAM goodness in my laptop.
The installation itself went very smoothly and quickly. I didn’t exactly time it, but I was done in less than half an hour. At the time of first boot, most of the devices were also installed. For the ones that weren’t installed, Windows Update found the drivers online and added them automatically. No problem for me here.
I was happy to discover that I didn’t even have to load any HP software (my laptop is an HP) in order to enable the fingerprint reader.

I simply went to Control Panel -> Biometrics and assigned several fingers (you never know which one will get chopped off
) to my account. Now I can forget my domain password, and just bug the IT staff whenever I actually need the forgotten password.
