The Trend is your Friend

While hunting down the cause of a malfunction or network outage, you commonly gather large volumes of data. Information gathering is not difficult, but analyzing data and figuring out something useful can be very hard. Take CPU utilization, for example. Determining whether 40% utilization is a highly unusual condition for your router or switch is a pretty ungraceful task if you don’t have any data to compare. You might look at your router’s CPU utilization for the last 72 hours with the handy command #show processes cpu history. But what if the root of your problem started more than three days ago? Or how would you check yesterday’s values of RAM?

A quick check might not grab your attention, but if you monitor the trend with NIL Monitor Service Management, what will happen in the next few days is pretty obvious.
NIL Monitor Service Management offers great help for interpreting the values, states and condition of your network. Having a reference in the past enables you to evaluate present trends and predict future events. Stockbrokers like to say, “The trend is your friend.” I’ll say this in addition: Make sure that you really monitor it.
